SourceForge ERP vs Tally Prime
When the Indian SMB default stops being enough — and what an AI-native alternative actually delivers.

Verdict
Tally is the answer for many Indian SMBs and probably always will be. SourceForge ERP is for the ones who have outgrown it but don't want a global enterprise system.
Choose SourceForge ERP if you want one system covering finance + operations, AI inside every workflow, mobile-first access for field teams, and a partner who builds the software (us) and stays on the project.
Stay on Tally Prime if you're <20 employees, your operations are simple, GST + statutory accounting is most of what you need, and you're price-sensitive on monthly recurring spend.

Why an Indian alternative to Tally exists at all
Tally is excellent at being Tally — a small, fast, locally-installable accounting engine that Indian chartered accountants have known for 35 years. Every business has needs Tally was not designed for: a sales rep on the road who needs to raise an invoice, a multi-warehouse stock model, a CFO who wants a dashboard, an MD who wants to ask 'what was my margin on jewellery sales in March in Mumbai' and get an answer in 3 seconds. SourceForge ERP exists because we kept building Tally workarounds for clients and decided it was time to build the layer above instead.
Built around the AI model, not bolted onto it
Most ERPs are adding AI features by stitching a chat widget onto existing screens. SourceForge ERP started from a different premise: assume Claude is available, design the workflows around it. The result is concrete — OCR a vendor invoice and post it as a journal in one click, type 'show me my largest overdue receivables from jewellery customers' and get a working report, ask Claude to draft a follow-up email to the top 10 outstanding customers and send. None of that is a chat widget on a screen. It is the work itself happening through AI.
What we cover that Tally does not
Beyond accounting and GST, SourceForge ERP includes: project costing (track time, expenses and revenue against jobs), HRMS (attendance, leave, performance reviews), payroll (with statutory deductions), manufacturing (bills of material, work orders, capacity), warehouse management (multi-bin, batch/serial tracking), CRM (lead pipeline through to invoice), and fixed asset management. These are not add-ons — they are part of the core product, designed to share master data and avoid the reconciliation tax of running separate systems.
Where Tally still wins
GST depth and audit familiarity. Tally has 35 years of compound investment in Indian statutory accounting; the GST module is the deepest in the market. Your CA knows Tally. If your needs end at 'good books, GST returns, basic inventory at one location' and you have 5-15 employees, you do not need us — you need Tally and a good accountant. We will tell you that on the discovery call.
How the cost shape differs
Tally is a one-time licence plus AMC — low year-one outlay, with ongoing add-ons (Tally on Cloud, Tally Mobile) sold separately. SourceForge ERP is per-user/month SaaS with a one-time implementation quoted upfront; everything thereafter (hosting, version upgrades, statutory updates, support, security patches) is bundled. Tally is cheaper for the first year for nearly any business. SourceForge ERP is typically cheaper over five years for any business with 10+ named users and ongoing operational complexity, because every ongoing cost is in the same bill rather than a growing pile of add-ons.
Migrating from Tally
A typical Tally-to-SourceForge migration runs 6-12 weeks. Week 1-2 is discovery and configuration; week 3-5 is master data migration (charts of accounts, customers, vendors, items, opening balances); week 6-8 is user acceptance testing and training; week 9-10 is parallel running; week 11-12 is cutover. Historical voucher-level data stays in Tally as a read-only archive — not because we cannot import it, but because we have never seen a case where the import was worth the risk.

Frequently asked questions
Probably not. Below 15-20 users, the operational complexity that justifies SourceForge ERP is rarely there, and Tally + a good accountant covers the use case at a fraction of the cost. We will say so on the discovery call. Above 20-30 users with multi-location or multi-company operations, the conversation flips.
